woodman fittings

Over the last few years, old original hardwood doorknobs, in decent matching quantities, have become difficult to find.

In the mid 1990s I set about making the tooling to recreate copies of the originals.. The ones that I finally decided upon are to the exact dimensions of original Victorian doorknobs that I have in my possession. The knobs are made in hardwood (beech) and the backplates are solid brass, polished and unlaquered.

Unlike much of the mass produced door furniture available at present, my doorknobs are individually handcrafted and finished to recreate a style indistinguishable from the original.

They are made in my own West Yorkshire workshop. I use copy turning lathes and fly presses and various tooling reclaimed or copied from the Victorian era.

The doorknobs are suitable for mortice fittings or rimlock.

If a mortice lock is required the doorknobs are supplied with fixed rotating backplates. The door knobs simply fit to the door via brass screws with a spindle that goes through the existing central latch.

If a rimlock fit is required the door knobs are supplied with two loose backplates (discount offered if only one backplate is required). The door knobs are then mounted on a square steel standard threaded and grooved spindle that measures 100mm and covers a door or door and rimlock thickness of between 30mm and 60mm.

The doorknobs are locked in position with steel grubscrews that are screwed through the neck of the doorknob and also through the central steel insert to give a secure and precise fit.

The backplate fixing screws are slotted and made of brass (not plated). If your doors are of above average width ( 2cm ) longer spindles are available at no extra cost.
